Hanging, Sorting, Tagging… oh my! (Part 2)

Hanging, Sorting, Tagging… oh my! (Part 2)

First step in the process!

Get your bins and put them on hangers.  While you are hanging your items INSPECT them for rips, stains, and tears.  Anything that is not sellable toss into a donate bin so you don’t spend any further time on them.  When you put them on the hanger be sure to button all of the buttons. zip the zippers, snap the snaps, etc.  You want your items to look good on the hanger!  If you have an oxford,  broadcloth shirt or khaki pants that you are asking a little bit more money for- you might want to hit it with the iron quickly- you want your clothing to have a good impression to the buyer!

Here is a second method:

  • First off, separate all of your clothing by gender.  Anything that is gender neutral you want to put with the boys since it sells better in boys than it does in girls.
  • The next thing you want to do is to sort all of your items by size.
  • Once your items are sorted by gender and size you want to start entering.

There are some deviations to the next step;

  • Some people like to enter 10 items and then print one sheet of tags and attach the tags to the garments.
  • Some people like to enter all of their items and then print one big batch.  If you are going to have Staples print your tags for you, entering all of your items is your best option.
  • Once have printed and cut your tags, you need to attach them to the garment with a tagging gun or safety pins.
  • Put the items on a hanger and group them together by size.
  • Zip tie, elastic band, tie a ribbon, etc around each size group so it is easier for transport and drop off.

As you can tell, there are many variations of how this can be done.  It may take a few sales to hit your stride and figure out what works best for you.

Happy Consigning!

Hanging, Sorting, Tagging… oh my! (Part 1)
piles of clothing.jpg

There are many different ways to organize, hang, tag, and sort. Here is one method that may be helpful.

First step in the process:

Get your bins and put them on hangers.  While you are hanging your items INSPECT them for rips, stains, and tears.  Anything that is not sellable toss into a donate bin so you don’t spend any further time on them.  When you put them on the hanger be sure to button all of the buttons. zip the zippers, snap the snaps, etc.  You want your items to look good on the hanger!  If you have an oxford,  broadcloth shirt or khaki pants that you are asking a little bit more money for- you might want to hit it with the iron quickly- you want your clothing to have a good impression to the buyer!

Method 1:
Put your sets together before you hang them on the rack.
Once your items are hung sort them into price piles.  You don’t need to sort by size or gender yet, just by how much you want to charge.  Start at $2, $3, $4, $5, $6, and then more than $6.  This way when you go to enter everything in you don’t have to think about what you are going to price each item, you already did that work.  After you entered everything for that price point, group print your tags on your card stock and tag everything for that price point.

Start with your most expensive pile.  If you get busy and can’t finish everything, at least all of your most expensive items and better items have made it into the system.  So, after you finish your “More than $6”  you go to the next price point down ($6) and work backwards.

Once you have completed tagging you can sort your items by gender and size.  We also suggest bundling your sizes together by twine, rubber band or zip tie to keep the sizes together securely.

This is just one of the many ways that you can get your items ready for the sale. There are many other ways to get organized, after a couple of sales you will find a method that works best for you!

Pricing Guide

Pricing is the number one thing that affects how your items sell on the sales floor.  It is the most important part of your tagging process.

Here are some simple pricing guidelines based on type of clothing:

Charge less for casual clothing (leggings, plain long sleeve tees, etc) , clothing in good condition, and infant clothing (under 2T) older toys.

Charge the top of the price range more for items new with tags, excellent condition clothing, hot item toys, items with manuals. Larger sizes and dressy items (dresses, nice tops and bottoms) can also command the higher end of the pricing spectrum.

Here is an example:  The children’s place button up oxford shirt, 4T, excellent condition.  Start at $3.00.  Add $1 for being a larger size (not infant).  Add .50 for being in excellent condition.  You end up with a price of $4.50.

Let’s say you have the same TCP shirt but it is 6-12 months and it is in good condition.  You start at $3 and you don’t add anything because it is a smaller size and it is only in good condition.

Take the emotion out of pricing.  Adding emotional value to your pricing does not equal sales.  If you are torn about selling something you are sentimental about, DO NOT SELL IT! You must take the emotion out of selling to price it properly.

GOLDEN RULE OF PRICING: When In Doubt, Go Low!  If you want your items to move, price low!

Are You Overpricing?
IMG_6023.JPG
If you are disappointed in your sell thru rate and you re you looking to increase it, here are some areas to consider.
Bedding: Most people have crib sheets on their registry.  We don’t take crib bedding sets for this reason.  If you have toddler, twin, standard, or queen bed sets, price them very low.  Bedding can be very personal and people want what they want.  However, if it’s prices low enough, they may want yours!  We suggest around 15% of retail for this category.

Decor: People have a specific theme for their children’s bedrooms, it isn’t likely that your theme is their theme.  However, if it is priced low enough, your theme just might become their theme!  We suggest 25%-30% retail.  Any other decor items, 15%-20% of retail.
Formal Gowns: We know you paid a bundle for that bridesmaid or prom dress however, if you want it to sell you need to price low.  You are not going to recoup your money for that dress, at all, ever.  We suggest 15% of retail for this category.
Clothing: Sizes 0-24 months.  These are the categories that inventory is in abundance.  Everyone gets tons of these items at their shower.  Also, babies don’t generally wear out their clothing before they grow out of it.  Make sets and price low so yours are the ones sold!
